That’s probably what you said, right?
I get it… I hated reading too and so did many of my friends in high school. Growing up as a millennial, we were forced to read books like “To Kill a Mockingbird…” or “Huckleberry Finn” literature. While they are great books and there are lessons to be learned, no one really mentioned that I could read in to becoming a wealthy entrepreneur. In fact, there seems to be a group of people who tells me that I have a poor taste in books because the title of the books often refer to making money. Such as “Think and Grow Rich” or “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. Both books, in my opinion, are phenomenal books to understanding how money can be earned and kept in your bank account. Finances are part of our lives. It doesn’t matter if you’re a businessman or businesswoman. If you are part of the working economy, money matters to you just as much it matters to me.
As a full time real estate investor and an entrepreneur, I attribute my financial and career success to the amount of books I have read. Each page that I read and flip, contains a golden nugget to the mindset shift that I get that would ultimately transform into my daily activities and productiveness in the business. Today, I typically read a book in one day. I’m going to show you how I do this despite my busy schedule. Again, no matter what your career or talent may be, I invite all of you to read as much as you can. And not just any books, I particularly recommend non-fiction books that cover topics such as relationships, spirituality, finances, personal growth, economy, history, philosophy and much more. Here are my reasons why you should pick up a book and start reading everyday.
In the books that I read, I often learn from the experiences of the author. I read a lot about finances and business development. I get an insight as to how the author grew his or her business and what sort of pitfalls to avoid. This serves as the ultimate life hack because you can avoid some of the pitfalls that the authors have made along their journey of life. Same can be said about the books that talk about love, relationships, philosophy and especially true for history.
I think a big part of our culture that I feel that is lacking is our education in the history. We don’t necessarily need a college degree in this topic to have a good understanding of it. You can simply buy a book for $10-$30 and get a good overview read of the history. For example, I bought a book on Napoleon Bonaparte’s life and it amazes me how much of a life lesson that was.
If you can learn from other people’s mistakes and experiences, you can avoid many of the tragedies in life. After all, who wants to run in to trouble all the time, right? For just few dollars, you can learn valuable lessons from the authors and other people’s lives.
The term “paradigm shift” was first introduced to me through a book titled: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Stephen R Covey. It’s a phenomenal book, by the way. The term paradigm shift refers to the idea that your perspective on a given experience or a moment can vary and depending on how you look at it, your responses may change as well. The book also talks about the idea of responsibility and how our paradigms can shift to looking at our life with a different pair of eyes. The book refers to the idea that we all have the responsibility to choose how we are to respond to different experiences. I know this all may sound like a garble of simple ideas but here’s an example. Let’s say that you’re in a relationship with someone you love. This person that you’re madly in love does something that may anger you. Your first emotional instinct may be to argue or to verbally attack the person. BUT, you can adopt a new paradigm and a mindset where you can carefully reflect on the freedom that you have to choose how you’re going to respond to your loved ones. By simply adopting this new way of thinking, you now gained additional freedom that cannot be taken away from you. You have the ultimately freedom by choosing how you want to see and how you want to respond. You are not a product of set instincts.
That is an example of what reading can do. In just a short paragraph, you learned that you have the ultimate freedom to respond and see differently. Books have this unique ability to also teach you about life and humanity. I’m using this exact account to demonstrate the power that reading has on people. This simple idea has changed the way I behave, think, speak and think. If you can choose this for yourself, think of the impact that you can have on your finances, relationships, career and much more!
When you further develop yourself and mindset, you will also attract higher quality of life. Like the title of this section, like attracts like. When you begin to add new knowledge and transform your mindset, you will begin to see the opportunities that were presented to you but you just lacked the paradigm shift to see it. When you begin to add knowledge, you’re going to attract the people who seem to respond positively to the fact that you are knowledgeable and that you have valuable thoughts to share. This is how, sometimes, I get paid to simply give people suggestions and opinions. This is how most consultants get paid. They are filled with knowledge, experience, new paradigms and new mindset that elevates them to becoming more specialized so they get paid more. Not only that, you become wiser through the experiences of other people you read about. Hence, you seem to attract better quality of friends, mates and associates who share a similar paradigm as you do.
This is HUGE from the understanding that you are who your friends are. Famous speaker and personal development expert Jim Rohn once said ” You are the reflection of the five people you associate with” (Paraphrased). This means that if 5 of your friends are drug junkies and they are off to no good, then you probably share the same values as they do. But, if 5 of your friends are goal-oriented, driven, success oriented… then you are also likely to be the same way. By reading, you will notice the difference in the quality of life that you can lead by attracting higher quality people and information.
By now, you understand a little more as to why I’m a huge fan of reading. But many of you guys may not have the time to read a book. Let alone, you may be too busy to even surf on the internet to look for a good read. I share the same challenge but this was all solved to an app that I would like to recommend. This particular app takes an entire book and summarizes it into a 15 min read filled with gold nuggets. This is super valuable as I don’t want to spend 8-10 hours on a book. In most cases, books contain one or few golden nuggets that the author wants to convey but the publishers may have demanded a longer read. This app also allows you to listen to the golden nugget summary so that you don’t have to sit down to actually even read. If you commute often and you like to workout, this app is the perfect way to get through materials instead of listening to music or the news.
